Some years ago Nederlandse Loterij initiated a strategic shift to enhance flexibility and adaptability within the evolving Dutch betting and online gaming market. They approached Trifork to help them move from a single-vendor software system to a decoupled, best-of-breed landscape involving multiple vendors.
The success of this project led to Trifork building a subscription management system responsible for the billing, collecting, and provisioning of tickets for ~1.5M subscription-based players across the various Nederlandse Loterij’s brands (Staatsloterij, Lotto, Miljoenenspel and Lucky Day).
Following the successful implementation of the base system, Trifork and Nederlandse Loterij once again teamed up to work on some long standing wishes that were not possible in the old system. Top of the list was to decrease the time between signup and actual participation in a lottery subscription.
From the onset, Nederlandse Loterij and Trifork planned for the subscription management system to evolve continually. The initial setup was designed as a foundation to support extensive future enhancements.
The goal was to create a system flexible enough to incorporate additional functionalities over the years, benefiting all of Nederlandse Loterij’s brands. This foresight ensured that the system could adapt to changing market demands and technological advancements, enhancing service delivery across the board.
In a landscape where transactions increasingly moved online with faster turnarounds than traditional methods, reducing the time from lottery subscription sign-up to first draw became a priority. To achieve this goal it was determined a flexible and robust credit management system was necessary.
Trifork was uniquely qualified to develop these features for Nederlandse Loterij, drawing from our extensive experience in building their original subscription management system and our deep expertise in integrating payment APIs.
Moreover, our longstanding partnership since 2017 has enabled us to accumulate a deep understanding of their technology and operational needs. This foundation, combined with our proven track record of delivering tailored solutions, positioned Trifork as the ideal partner to continue supporting Nederlandse Loterij’s technological evolution.
The approach involved aligning several different departments within Nederlandse Loterij to ensure everyone was on the same page with regards to the requirements for speeding up the onboarding as well as how to deal with credit management across all the different lotteries you can subscribe to. This meant a close collaboration with Nederlandse Loterij and their subscription payment service provider, Buckaroo.
Our goal was to streamline the user experience of subscribing to a lottery, aiming to reduce the time between subscribing and participating in a lottery game from 8 weeks to as little as 2 days, provided a draw is scheduled within that time frame. To ensure this we created an automated credit management solution that could seamlessly integrate with existing systems, manage the invoices based on real-time payment feedback, and facilitate an efficient subscription management process.
The new Credit Management System was developed by Trifork in 2023 and automates the management of subscription eligibility based on payment status, enhances the sign-up process, and provides robust management of credit issues. It does this by integrating standard credit management facilities from the payment service provider, communication services managed by Nederlandse Loterij and the custom subscription solution already in place.
The system ensures that subscription participation aligns with payment success, thereby maintaining both service integrity and customer satisfaction. As a result, Nederlandse Loterij receives the payments it is owed, while subscribers are only charged for the draws in which they actually participated.
The new Credit Management System reduces the time for lottery participation via subscription from 8 weeks to as little as 2 days.
It automates credit and payment tracking, lowering payment defaults and ensuring only successful payments enable participation, improving operational efficiency and reducing administrative tasks for Nederlandse Loterij.
For subscribers, the system offers a more reliable and uninterrupted service, with transparent charges only for the draws they participate in.
Additionally, integrated communication services keep customers informed, boosting engagement and satisfaction while building trust in the subscription service.
With annual revenues of over €6.4 billion, Nederlandse Loterij is the largest lottery and gaming organization in the Netherlands with a significant impact on Dutch society. Nederlandse Loterij offers traditional lottery games, sports betting and instant games. It offers attractive, regulated games of chance to Dutch players.
Every year, Nederlandse Loterij gives almost all of its profits to the Dutch sporting community via the organization NOC*NSF. In 2023 this amounted to 196 million. These funds support 18 good causes in the field of health, sports, exercise and welfare. In addition, a part of the proceeds are also given to the larger Dutch society via the Ministry of Finance.
