Transforming exams

As the traditional pen and paper exams have slowly been replaced by computers either on location or remotely, the need for tools to combat cheating has become a necessity to ensure the integrity of the exam results.

Although one would hope moral values would discourage one from cheating when in an exam setting faced with a difficult question, the temptation is there. Particularly when answers to those tricky questions are only a few clicks away and it would be fairly easy to get away with it. But if examiners monitoring exams by walking around the room is not enough to ensure academic honesty, what is? How do examiners in this new digital age ensure the integrity of the exam conditions?

The solution

Well, luckily, Trifork has a solution, the Lockdown Browser. As you might guess from the name, the Lockdown Browser is a browser that locks down your device. An easy to use service that once started will take control over the computer where the exam is taken so that only the exam is accessible and nothing else. It is your exam integrity savior if you will.

But how does it do it?

To ensure that no other page is accessible during the exam, it is launched on a single window. There is also no address bar or browser tools available, and the student can only have access to what you grant them access to. There are no cheat codes, no shortcut keys, no copy & paste that can help when using this browser.

To give you an example of how it works, there are four steps:

Step 1: Students start the Lockdown Browser

Step 2: The browser is pre-configured to a specific URL that starts the exam in the Lockdown Browser.

Step 3: Students complete the exam in lockdown mode; no other windows are accessible.

Step 4: Once the exam is complete, the browser will resume and clear the cache.

So as you can see, the Lockdown Browser facilitates a safe examination environment.

It is all around an easy-to-use tool that can help prevent academic dishonesty during exams.

However, the Lockdown Browser is not only for schools and universities as it can also be used for any type of license or certification, workforce testing, or government certificates. Any online examination that needs to be secure, the Lockdown Browser can help.
